Herbs

herbal-picture-1.jpgThe potent healing qualities of herbs have been used in different therapeutic philosophies throughout history. We find plants used within the Indian ayurvedic system, in Chinese medicine alongside acupuncture and other techniques. They play a very important role in the spiritual healing ecology of the North American Indians.

We see them being used as a source of drugs in the highly scientific and technological approach of modern pharmacy and allopathic medicine.

In fact allopathic medicine, now often called ‘orthodox’ medicine, has it’s roots in the use of herbs. Until about 50 years ago, nearly all the entries in the pharmacopoeias describing the manufacture of drugs indicated a herbal origin.

Herbs have been used for thousands of years to prevent and treat a huge number of physical symptoms. They can be used to support and strengthen organs, as well as cleanse and detoxify the body. They can bring balance and harmony when used alongside other complementary remedies.

Herbal tinctures are prepared from various parts of a plant and some may unsuitable in this form when taken with other conventional medicine. Some tinctures are also unsuitable during pregnancy. Confirm the suitability with your homeopath or prescriber before taking.

Herbal tinctures are usually very bitter in taste and need to be taken in a small amount of water. For children, water can be substituted for flavoured drinks to disguise the taste.

The following quote of which I am unsure of the source so am unable to credit,  is reflective of the way history works in cycles and how herbs have their roots from the beginning of time:

2000 BC: Here, take this root

1000 AD: That root is for a heathen. Here say this prayer

1850 AD: That prayer is superstition. Here drink this potion

1940 AD: That potion is snake oil. Here swallow this pill

1985 AD: That pill is ineffective. Here take this antibiotic

2000 AD: That antibiotic is artificial. Here eat this root
